Simulation of Polymeric Flow in a Twin-screw Extruder: an Analysis of Elongational Viscosity Effects
نویسنده
چکیده
Flow of a polymer in an intermeshing co-rotating twin-screw extruder is simulated. Effect of elongational viscosity on the flow is analyzed using independent powerlaw models for the shear and elongational viscosities. Axial component of the velocity is found to be maximum in the intermeshing region of the extruder. Axial component of velocity, which determines the throughput of the extruder, decreased as the elongational viscosity of the polymer used for the flow simulation was increased. The pressure in the extruder decreased from a very high positive value on the leading edge to a very large negative value on the trailing edge of the screw. For the same rotational speed the pressure build-up in the twin-screw extruder increased as the elongational viscosity of the polymer was increased.

Simulation results for mixing of two different polymers in a co-rotating twin-screw extruder are presented. Velocity distribution predicted by a threedimensional simulation of the flow is used to predict the change in the spatial distribution of initially segregated particles as well as the reduction in radius due to erosion. The predicted particle distribution is used to estimate the increase ...

Passive advection of light particles carried by a high viscosity fluid in polymer processing equipment exhibits complex behavior due in part to the non-linearity of the equation of motion. The particles motion also exhibits sensitivity to the initial positions. A fundamental understanding of the influence of initial positions of particles on the quality and rate of distributive mixing is essent...

A new algorithm for simulation of non-isothermal flow in a twin-screw extruder is introduced. In the new algorithm, the finite element mesh of tetrahedral elements is created in the complete barrel including the space occupied by the screws. By partitioning the tetrahedral elements which are intersected by the screw surfaces into two tetrahedral, pyramidal or prismatic finite elements, the new ...
